- Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio Rachel Spencer earned her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Capital University. She received her Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin in Music and Human Learning where she was a teaching assistant for the University Bands. She has experience playing in a wide variety of groups from brass band to salsa to trio and prides herself on her versatility.
Ms. Spencer has shared the stage with many incredible musicians such as Bill Watrous, Sean Jones, Grace Kelly, and the Austin Symphony. During her time at UT she directed the Longhorn Jazz Ensemble, and helped to found the UT Jazz Girls Day camp. Ms. Spencer dedicates herself to playing music of all styles, including classical trumpet: She has performed in the UT Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, and was a Graduate Soloist semifinalist for the National Trumpet Competition in 2019. Through her music she has been fortunate to travel performing in the Chinese New Year Parade in Hong Kong, Tanglewood, TMEA, OMEA, and jazz festivals around the country.
Ms. Spencer has served on faculty for the Longhorn Music Camp, Texas Jazz and Blues Camp, and works closely with the Jazz Education Network. As an educator she is a band director and teachers private lessons. Her major teachers and influencers include Rob Parton, Lou Fischer, Marie Spezalie, Wiff Rudd, Chris Martin, and Michael Martin.
